Hi, my name’s Karen.

I’m a wildlife artist originally from Northern Ireland and now living in Christchurch, New Zealand, inspired by slowing down and the simple beauty of nature.
My work begins with the quiet moments I notice outdoors: a bird pausing on a branch, a flash of movement through the trees, or a moment that makes you stop and look a little closer.
Through The Quiet Wild, I hope my work brings a little of that calm into your home and reminds you to pause and look closer.

Since moving to New Zealand, I’ve become fascinated by the native birds here.
Some are wonderfully bold and full of character, while others are so tiny and well camouflaged that you could walk straight past without ever knowing they were there.
The more time I spent outdoors with my camera, the more I found myself slowing down, watching and noticing the little things I’d once have walked straight past.
That’s how The Forest Collection began.

Four native birds, each with their own personality, captured in those quiet moments that make you stop and look a little closer.
From those first encounters come the photographs, sketches and eventually the finished pastel paintings.
And now I’d love to share a little of that experience with you.

I want more people to experience the pleasure of living with wildlife art.
Not everyone is in a position to purchase an original painting or a fine art print, and I don’t think that should mean missing out on having something beautiful and meaningful on their wall.
But there’s another reason too.
I’d love these four little birds to encourage people to take a closer look at the wildlife around them.
Maybe you’ll choose the ruru because you’ve heard one calling at night. Perhaps the kererū regularly visits your garden, making a complete hash of landing in the trees!
Or maybe you’ll discover a bird you’ve never really noticed before.
And the next time you see one, you’ll recognise it. You might even stop for a moment to watch what it’s doing.
Because I believe the more we notice and appreciate the natural world, the more we begin to care about protecting it.
And sometimes that connection starts with something as simple as a little painting on the wall.

I’m Karen, a wildlife artist based in Christchurch, New Zealand, although there’s still plenty of Belfast tucked into the edges.
I spend a slightly unreasonable amount of time watching birds, wandering beside rivers and trying to photograph wildlife before it notices me first. Those encounters become the beginnings of my soft pastel paintings.
